Artwork Preparation

Artwork questions to settle before printing

Bring the artwork you have, explain the layout and agree the approval point. A useful checklist for your next custom packaging inquiry.

Start with the artwork you have

You do not need to describe a complete print layout from memory. Send the logo, design files and visual references you already have, then explain how you want the packaging to look. If the design is not final, make that clear in your first inquiry.

A photograph or screenshot can help explain a direction, but it may not contain everything needed for production. The files and approval requirements should be confirmed for the specific packaging order.

Show the print position

Describe which side should be printed and where the artwork sits in relation to the opening, closure and other features. A simple marked reference can be useful. If the front and back are different, label them clearly.

Include any text that needs to remain readable or any space needed for labels. If several sizes use related artwork, show which design belongs to each size. Naming the files clearly helps the discussion stay organized.

Discuss size and colour references

The packaging dimensions and the artwork dimensions are related parts of the brief. Say whether you want the design to keep the same proportions, occupy a particular area or match an existing package. Confirm the final layout before approving the order.

If you have an established colour reference, share it. Explain what you use to judge the result. Colours viewed on different screens or in photographs can appear different, so agree how artwork and any requested sample will be reviewed.

Artwork question Useful information
Which version? Clear file name, revision and the size it belongs to
Which side? Front, back and any differences between them
What position? A marked reference showing the intended layout
Which colours? Your existing reference and the review process to confirm
What is final? Text and design details approved for the particular order

Clarify what a sample is for

If you want a sample, explain what it should help you review: the format, size, material discussion, artwork position or the overall presentation. Sample pricing is based on the customization requirements. Ask what will be covered by the proposed sample before arranging it.

Keep artwork review and order approval connected. If a design changes after a sample is discussed, identify that change clearly so it can be reflected in the quotation and agreed specification.

Agree the approval point

Before production is scheduled, confirm the product, dimensions, quantity, artwork version and the decisions still outstanding. A clear approval point reduces the chance that a reference image is mistaken for a final instruction.

Timing follows the agreed brief. The fastest factory dispatch depends on the order details and artwork approval. A design that is still changing needs to be discussed when you plan the schedule.
